About the school and city

The school was started in 1987 by Val Hennessy while she was studying for her PhD. It was named The Language Project but became IH Bristol in 2009 when it joined the network.

The school has two buildings, both in Clifton, the university quarter. The school offers a range of courses from junior summer and winter programmes to exam courses, one-to-one, modern foreign language courses and teacher training. There is a warm and friendly atmosphere; IH Bristol aims to give back to the community: we have taught many refugee classes in Bristol and have been involved in development projects in Cuba, Angola and Vietnam.

The team is working towards making their operation more environmentally sustainable and has so far installed 100s of ultra-low energy light fittings and fixtures and sophisticated heating controls.
