IH Torquay

Torquay, UK

Torquay International School was established in 1972 and is the oldest EFL school in Torquay. In 2019 we were affiliated to International House.

IH Torquay offers a wide range of General English courses for adults and young learners. We also offer Discover Devon 50+ and ESP courses.

And as well as these language programmes we offer teacher training, specifically the CELTA. Stuart Gale runs the teacher training department. Stuart has extensive experience working as a Teacher Trainer, including on CELTA courses. He was Teacher Training Director at IH Bangkok and has worked at IH London on F2F and online courses for several years. He has worked for the British Council on Teacher Training projects all over the world.

The advantage of taking the CELTA at a busy language school is that all trainees will have the opportunity to see qualified teachers in action, and ask them what a life in teaching is like.

Life in and around Torquay

Located in the South West of England, IH Torquay offers an unrivalled study environment by the sea, with easy access to Dartmoor National Park and the beautiful Devon countryside, away from the rush and pressure of London and other cities in UK.

Torquay has more attractions than any other seaside town in the UK, numerous exciting events throughout the year and plenty of opportunities for sports, particularly water sports.

Some of the best bars and restaurants are at Torquay harbour and on the beach front. From the harbour you can catch the local ferry across the bay to Brixham. Cockington is located a short bus ride away along the sea front and has a craft centre as well as lovely walks in the woods. Babbacombe has spectacular views across to the Jurassic coast and coastal walks start from here.

Studying at IH Torquay

Exeter airport is 30 minutes away and Bristol airport, with good connections to Europe with EasyJet and Ryanair, is about 2 hours away. There are good connections from Torquay railway station and from the local coach station to all parts of the UK. Transfers can easily be arranged.

The school is only a few minutes on foot to the centre of the town where buses can take you around the bay.  Free parking is available in the streets very near the school.

The school has a lounge where you can purchase snacks but just down the road there are a number of restaurants and cafes to choose from. A meal deal can be purchased from a local supermarket. The school has a large garden and we have evening barbeques in the summer months.
