Who is this course designed for
The IH Dublin Junior Certificate in TEFL is specifically designed by the Irish Department of Education. This course is for primary and secondary school teachers who wish to teach English to teenagers in the junior ELE sector, primarily in ACELS recognised summer centres. There is a huge opportunity for participants who complete this course to work at our school as an International House teacher.
The course is aimed at candidates who:
- Are state qualified primary and secondary school teachers.
- Have completed a course of study and are awaiting conferral of a B.Ed. or Postgraduate Diploma (Education).
- Are in the process of doing a Postgraduate Diploma (Education) Course, or are in their final year of a B.Ed. Course.
Course objectives and assessment
The seminar and input programme covers key areas from the syllabus addressing a wide range of key methodological and language issues and building on and extending candidates’ learning from their experience of teaching practice. Topics covered will include
- Overview of Junior programmes in Ireland
- Developing the 4 skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing
- Language analysis: tense overview, tense and aspect, modality
- Language presentation types
- Classroom interaction and class management
- Evaluation of teaching materials, published and authentic
- Vocabulary
- Phonology
- Songs and games in the classroom
There are three written assignments, and a post course teaching practice.
Your time commitment
This is a full time course for 5 days, with 30 hours of lessons.
You should also plan some time for pre-course reading and completing assignments.
