About the teacher training centre
IH Aberdeen scored ten areas of strength in the 2016 British Council inspection putting them number 1 in Scotland in the language school rankings compiled by the EL Gazette.
Aberdeen is a very friendly city! Known as the granite city, it is said to sparkle in the sunshine. Aberdeen is in the North East of Scotland – a small city with two fantastic universities, a vibrant international community and a population of approx. 230,000 people. The school is located in the heart of the city centre – on the mile-long Union Street.
Aberdeen is often ranked as one of the best places to live in Scotland and the UK and this is reflected in the melting pot of nationalities who live and work here.
Aberdeen is a thriving city with a strong cultural agenda. With a newly reopened art gallery, two theatres and a music hall as well as various different markets at weekends there is always something to do.
What is the CELTA?
The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time).
Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:
- Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
- The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
- Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors. This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.
You’ll have to complete some written assignments as well, but when it’s all successfully completed you’ll be ready for your first job and first students!

CELTA at IH Aberdeen
IH Aberdeen is a small, friendly school where you will soon feel like part of the team. Our students come from all over the world, making it a truly international experience.
IH Aberdeen is the only CELTA centre in the northeast of Scotland. By offering both full time and online courses we aim to offer courses which will suit people who are currently working or studying as well as those looking for a complete career change.
As a university city, our full-time courses, in particular, attract a lot of recent graduates. Our blended courses tend to have a mix of both recent graduates and working professionals of all ages, either those looking for a career change or those who come from a teaching background and are looking to specialise in EFL.
If you choose the blended online option, you will need to be in Aberdeen between 10th and 21st Feb (Tues-Tues) and 9th-20th March (Tues-Tues) for the teaching practice sessions.
There will be an additional Cambridge fee of £156 to pay.
