IH Izmir

Izmir, Turkey

IH Izmir is right in the centre of the metropolitan city of Izmir, on the Azure blue waters of the Aegean Sea - just a four minute walk to the waterfront. Izmir is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the whole mediterranean basin - with a wealth of history to explore.

Once the ancient city of Smyrna, Izmir is now a modern commercial center, set around a huge bay and surrounded by mountains. The broad steets, glass-fronted buildings and modern shopping centers are dotted with traditional red-tiled roofs, colourfully painted houses, an 18th century market, and old mosques and churches. When visiting, you will definitely get a feeling of Mediterranean Europe set within modern Turkey.

The school IH Izmir specialises in teacher training - so you will be in great hands taking your CELTA here. More than 200 people take a CELTA with IH Izmir every year. The school has more than ten years experience of training and supporting its students.

Life in and around Izmir

Pictured here is the clock tower, a symbol of Izmir, located in the heart of the city in Konak Square. This is just a ten minute walk from IH Izmir, and a popular place for residents and vistors in the day and evening.

The Konak Yali Mosque and Kemeraltı Bazaar are located around Konak square, so you'll always find plenty of activity here. Walking tours of the whole Alsancak quarter start here.

For weekends and days when you'll have a little more time to explore, the ancient city of Ephesus is just 80 km south of Izmir. Ephesus was an ancient port which retains its well-preserved ruins. The city was once considered the most important Greek city and the most important trading center in the Mediterranean region, although its now part of modern Turkey.

For a more intimate smaller town feel, the village of Sirince is near to Ephesus. It's located in the green hills, famous for  olive oil, peaches and wine, and Ottoman Christian archtectiture.
