Job description

Are you a qualified English Language Teacher looking to develop your skills and career in a well-established school in South Italy? We have teaching vacancies for EU and non-EU nationals who are as committed as we are to providing quality learning experiences for students.

🏫WHO WE ARE 🏫
Founded in 1964, the British School of Reggio Calabria is a private language school which has also, in recent years, branched out into mainstream education with courses in local state and private educational institutions. We are a Cambridge English Platinum centre, and our students value our expertise in exam preparation. As part of our commitment to continuous improvement and teacher development, in recent years we also became a CELTA centre.

🤝OUR VALUES 📜

INCLUSIVITY 🌍
We aim to provide an inclusive, international environment, for both staff and students, which celebrates diversity and cultural exchange.

Our teaching team includes educators from various countries and backgrounds to help prepare students for the English they will need in the future. We provide support and assistance with visa applications and work permits for non-EU nationals.

We are committed to making our school more inclusive and we support teachers in adapting lessons and materials to promote a sense of belonging in class.

As part of IH, both our teachers and students collaborate with IH schools around the world not only to promote intercultural awareness and understanding, but also as a way of building lasting friendships and connections.

QUALITY 🏆

We believe that we have a responsibility to maximise our students’ potential and we recognise the importance of learning from those with different perspectives and experiences, often outside our immediate context.

We are part of both national (AISLi) and international (IH World) networks of quality language schools, with regular inspections to ensure we are meeting rigorous academic standards and promoting excellence.

While teachers are given freedom in planning lessons, we provide coursebooks and skeleton guides for the majority of our courses to help ensure that course objectives are met, and our Academic Management team support teaching staff in helping learners to meet their goals.

Outside the lessons, a team of professionals also follow our students’ progress very carefully, ensuring that they are on path to achieve their objectives and that timely support can be provided where needed.

CONTINUOUS LEARNING 📚

As educators, we believe in promoting continuous professional and personal development amongst all staff and we aim to create a culture of curiosity, encouraging all staff and students to question, explore, and discover new ideas.

Teachers benefit from observations (formal, informal, peer), incremental coaching, INSETT sessions, appraisals, and role-specific training. We hold an annual conference each year and our teachers benefit from workshops especially for them. Past speakers have included author Anne Robinson, Adrian Underhill, Jim Scrivener and many other leading names in ELT.

As a school with students ranging in age from pre-schoolers to adults, and a variety of classes (General EFL, Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), Subject Teaching (Maths, Biology, Geography IGCSE), state school teaching, group, and individual classes), we can offer teachers the opportunity to further develop through taking on different class types, or to specialise in certain age groups. Former teachers have commented how their experience with us prepared them for a move into mainstream education.

Teachers who meet the requirements stipulated by Cambridge can benefit from subsidised training to become a Cambridge Speaking Examiner, thus increasing their earning potential.

🗺️WHERE WE ARE 🌴

Reggio is a warm, friendly city, situated right next to the sea on the toe of Italy. Join the locals each evening for a kilometre-long passeggiata on its palm tree-lined promenade and enjoy the stunning views of Sicily and Mt. Etna. The centre of Reggio has shops, bars and places to eat but is also small enough for everything to be within easy walking distance. Depending on the season, there is plenty to do in the province from walking along the beaches and sailing, to skiing in the nearby mountains and eating in a cosy agriturismo. Our teachers love exploring the undiscovered Calabrian countryside with the dramatic and impressive backdrop of the Aspromonte mountain range.

The city is also ideally situated for visiting other places in Italy with a small port (ferry to Sicily and the Aeolian Islands), a train station (including a fast train to Rome), and an airport (flights to Rome and Milan, with additional low-cost flights in the pipeline from April 2024 to the UK, Ireland, Poland, France, and key Italian cities). Catania Fontanarossa or Lamezia Terme airport (roughly 1 hour away) also have different direct connections.

About the school and city

Established in 1964, the school joined the IH network in 2015. It is now run by Marco and Patrizia, a husband and wife duo, who took the school over from the founder, Patrizia’s mother Christa, some years ago. They continue to invest in their team’s professional development and very much adhere to the IH value of lifelong learning.

The school is in the heart of the city, just a stone’s throw from the beach, with breathtaking views of Mount Etna across the Strait of Messina.
With regard to English language courses, they offer a wide range of courses to learners aged from 3 through to adults and ranging in level from Beginner to C2 (Proficiency). They also teach History, Biology and Maths in English in local state schools.
