Taking the CELTA in Latvia
If you want to study the CELTA course in Latvia, you can expect a world of theatrical art nouveau architecture with charming forests in abundance. As one of the Baltic States at the east of Europe Latvia has temperate summers and very cold winters, which are perfect if you enjoy skiing and snowy landscapes. The cost of living is relatively low and many countries can travel visa-free for up to 90 days (but always check before you travel). The academic year in Latvia goes from September to the start of June.
Latvia is an incredibly picturesque choice to start your TEFL career, so if you can explore more of the country before or after your CELTA course, you will have the opportunity to take in some scenic landscapes. Fairytale-like forests cover about 45 per cent of Latvia and there are 4 national parks to enjoy nature in: Gauja, Kemeri, Razna and Slitere. The country also has 531km of coastline, so although you might not think of Latvia as a place to spend a summer holiday, it is possible to enjoy the beach and go for a dip in the sea (if you’re feeling brave!).
After a long day of teacher training on the CELTA, you’re going to need some delicious food to keep powering your brain, but Latvia has got you covered. Smoked fish, speck (pork belly bacon), potatoes and other seasonal vegetables, dry-curd cottage cheese, rye bread, and grey peas form the base of many traditional dishes. Each Latvian town produces its own beer, so wherever you are, make sure to sample the local craft brew.

CELTA in Riga
Small enough to get around easily, but big enough to have everything you need, Riga is a vibrant European city and a perfect place to take the CELTA. With cobbled lanes and historic buildings, this capital city will impress you with its gorgeous architecture, particularly in the Old Town. Here you will find a skyline of spires and many charming squares with beer gardens and street cafes to enjoy.
There are lots of cultural events and outdoor festivals all year round in Riga, such as the Riga Music Festival, Latvian Song and Dance Festival, and Winterfest. After a day of TEFL, head to Miera Iela, Riga’s bohemian quarter and creative hub, where you can find shops, tea houses and other establishments, as well as amazing street art. If you manage to escape for a day from your CELTA in Riga, make sure you take a trip to Jurmala Beach where you can enjoy a 33km stretch of white-sand beach.
