About the teacher training centre

IH Galway is situated in the beautiful university city of Galway on the spectacular Atlantic coast of Ireland. Galway city has 75,000 inhabitants, 20% of whom are university students, and this small size means that the city has a friendly atmosphere and is also very safe for IH students.

We are a Cambridge Assessment teacher training centre and we offer CELTA and DELTA courses. As well as this, we offer year round General English for adults, Cambridge Suite, IELTS and OET exam preparation courses, and summer programmes for teens.  This means that our CELTA candidates will get a feel for an international language school with a mix of students of different nationalities.

The school, which is located right in Eyre Square, was started by Mary Grennan, who is an internationally renowned CELTA and DELTA trainer.

What is the CELTA?

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time).

Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:

  1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
  2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
  3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors.  This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.

You’ll have to complete some written assignments as well, but when it’s all successfully completed you’ll be ready for your first job and first students!

100% Online CELTA at IH Galway

Following the Irish Government's recent announcement of the latest restrictions on movement, we've changed the structure of our next CELTA course to make it possible for candidates to take our CELTA course 100% online from their homes.

The course dates will be May 25 - June 26

The course will be a bit different to our normal CELTA Online and face to face courses. It will take place over five weeks, so closer in time to a full-time course, and it will be 100% online. International House CELTA centres around the world are now running CELTA courses 100%   as part of an initiative by the University of Cambridge Assessment English, who administer the qualification, to adapt to our current situation. Feedback from CELTA candidates is positive.

CELTA tutors at International House Galway are qualified and experienced online tutors, who have been running CELTA Online courses at IH centres since it was first developed in 2012.

The International House Galway CELTA Online course content and final qualification will be exactly the same as on any other CELTA course. Below is an overview of our CELTA Online course:

Input - online

Modules will be scheduled weekly and candidates will complete a series of tasks per module. This input is the same as what we have on our CELTA Online courses and the daily commitment will be 3 hours, as on a full-time course. It would be best to complete these modules at the same time every day and we recommend that they be completed in the morning.

Assignments - online

Candidates complete 4 assignments during the CELTA course and these will be set weekly by the Course Tutors. Assignments can be completed at any time during the week they're set. On a full time course, these tend to be completed at the weekends or when candidates have time in the evenings.

Teaching Practice - live online

This is the live online part of the course, meaning in real time, with you, the candidate, your Teaching Practice students, your Course Tutor and your fellow CELTA candidates. Candidates will complete six hours of assessed Teaching Practice, which will take place from 14:00-18:00 every day Monday-Friday. Candidates will teach every second day, so Monday/Wednesday/Friday one week and Tuesday/Thursday the next week and so on. Candidates must be available to attend Teaching Practice every afternoon Monday-Friday from 14:00-18:00.

Teaching practice will consist of:
Teaching Practice lessons: 14:00-16:00
Feedback: 16:15-17:00
Guided lesson planning: 17:15-18:00

Further live online sessions - unique to International House Galway

Candidates will attend two live online input sessions with CELTA Tutors per week. These times will be confirmed once we assess which times best suit candidates. These sessions are unique to the International House Galway CELTA course as we feel that candidates will benefit from additional live sessions during which they can speak with the Course Tutors and get answers to questions.

Shadowing a teacher post-course - unique to International House Galway

As candidates should ideally have the opportunity to see and participate in face to face teaching also, we are offering them the possibility of shadowing teachers for two weeks following the course. This will include some partner teaching opportunities also. This will not be compulsory but will be offered to CELTA graduates as part of our unique CELTA course as we feel that graduates will benefit from both observing experienced teachers live in class and team teaching with the teachers to help them develop further.

Learning how to teach online

This IH Galway CELTA Online course will also have an added benefit - candidates who attend this unique CELTA course will finish the course with knowledge about how to plan and teach lessons in a live online environment, which will allow graduates to apply for online teaching positions around the world.

CELTA at IH Galway

The CELTA course at IH Galway is focused primarily around learning from the practical experience of preparing lessons and teaching them, followed by reflective consideration and evaluation that will inform future lessons. For this reason, the core element of the CELTA is Teaching Practice.

The other main elements (common to all CELTA programmes) are:

  • seminar input, where you look at aspects of teaching, such as, for example, ways to introduce language, how to help students practise listening or reading or how to help students with pronunciation
  • observation of experienced teachers and of peers
  • four written assignments

On a full-time course, the timetable will look like this every week:

  • Input: Monday-Friday 09:00-10:20; 10:40-12:00
  • Guided Lesson Planning (GLP):  12.00-13.00
  • Teaching Practice (TP) and feedback:  14.00-17.00

CELTA Online (Blended Part Time)

At IH Galway, we offer the CELTA Online Course as a blended teacher training course that combines distance CELTA training with face-to-face components. During the Covid 19 restrictions, teaching practice sessions will be held live online. Teaching Practice (TP) is an extremely important part of any teacher training course and the face-to-face or live online teaching practice element of the Cambridge CELTA Course Online ensures candidates gain this valuable experience. Teaching Practice is conducted in groups, with each candidate teaching for a total of six hours, with peers observing, as on the face to face CELTA course. Your course tutor will give you feedback on each of your teaching practice sessions. Training in the online part of the course includes self-study units, interactive tasks, assignments, guided video observations, forum discussions and live sessions. The aim is to develop effective, principled teaching methodologies. An advantage of the online component is the increased amount of time and support for you to reflect on and develop what you have learnt.

Guided lesson planning, teaching practice and feedback happen on Saturdays (exact times will depend on the number of candidates on the course).

CELTA student testimonials

I had always heard that the CELTA course was a life changing thing to do but I had never thought it would be so truly fulfilling. As a non-native speaker and a non-experienced teacher, I was afraid of making mistakes in teaching practice. However, the daily and constant support and encouragement from International House Galway tutors and colleagues made this fear disappear very fast! I not only discovered that I was able to teach, but also that I really enjoyed it. The energy of standing in front of a group of people willing to learn and to be able to teach them something is something that I never thought could give me such a feeling of fulfilment. Maialen Solabarrieta

I thoroughly enjoyed taking the Part-time/Online CELTA course at International House Galway. The facilities and materials at the school were great and we had dedicated and supportive tutors who provided us with constructive feedback throughout the course and encouraged us to exceed our own standards of teaching. Although the course was intensive, it was well worth doing as I now have invaluable knowledge and skills for the classroom and I am more confident in my ability to teach English successfully! Linda Moran
