IH Guayaquil is a very well established community school which started teaching in 2008. We are strategically located in the business district which is the north centre of the city.  From our centre, all of the most important areas of the city can be accessed in 10 to 15 minutes. The premises are located in an old Colonial style house. There are a total of 10 classrooms of varying sizes over three floors.

We teach a range of English courses to adults, teens and young learners. IH Guayaquil is an authorized centre for Cambridge Assessment English and British Council IELTS. In particular we specialize in teacher training courses such as: CELT P & CELT S and CELTA.

The teacher training department of IH Guayaquil is run by Daniel Miller who has been with the school for 10 years.   He is originally from Texas and has lived in multiple cities around Ecuador.

Taking a training course at a working language institute sheds light on what you can expect after the course.   At IH Guayaquil teachers-in-training are welcomed as part of the of the larger team of EFL professionals.

What is the CELTA

The CELTA is a TEFL qualification which prepares you to teach English as a foreign language. You don’t need any existing English language teaching experience or training. It’s usually a 4 or 5 week full time course (but you can also take it part time).

Standing up in front of a class for the first time is a daunting prospect, so you need to make sure you have the skills you need to teach effectively. The CELTA prepares you for the classroom in these ways:

  1. Taught sessions on methodology, lesson planning, language analysis and language skills. (In total, you’ll have 120 hours of input.)
  2. The opportunity to observe experienced teachers in a real-life language classroom situations – so you can see the different skills and techniques they use.
  3. Teaching yourself – with helpful and detailed feedback from your tutors.  This practical experience is invaluable when you start your first job.

You’ll have to complete some written assignments as well, but when it’s all successfully completed you’ll be ready for your first job and first students!

Daniel Miller

Daniel has been an EFL teacher for 10 years and a teacher trainer for 4 years. He want his trainees to enjoy the process of the course. It is truly a unique and rare experience to work so closely and intensely on something with a group of motivated individuals. It’s easy to get swept up everything that is going on, so it is important to stop and smell the roses from time to time.

Wouter Redelinghuys

Wouter advises his students "Don’t be afraid to take risks. That goes for what you do in the classroom or in what contexts to choose to work. There may be some trial and tribulations, but I have found that saying “yes”, generally leads to good things."

CELTA Student Testimoinials

"The CELTA tutors for my course modelled a proficiency in teaching English that engaged me so effectively as a learner that it took some time to recognize their seemingly effortless flow as a carefully constructed and minutely controlled, multi-stage processes. They served as coaches, critics and models of extraordinary teaching skill." RW
